As Salaamu alaikum.
Well, it seems you want to be a coach. For many, this has become trendy decision. For you, it is a passion that speaks to your soul. You are already the go-to person everyone comes to for advice, and you’ve developed your listening skills over the years. Coaching is a natural fit for you. Yet you wonder if you have what it takes, whether people take you seriously and if you be able to make money.
In this article, you will, insha Allah, learn how you can build confidence in your coaching skills without having a long list of credentials behind your name.
Step 1: Know you are enough
Not everyone is called to be a coach and wants to do the deep work of transforming people’s lives. Know that if Allah has put in your heart to be a coach, insha Allah, it is possible for you to excel at it. Owning your desire is the beginning of growing your confidence in stepping in this new uncertain role.
Step 2: Develop an “I can” mindset
The words “I can’t” are two of the most detrimental words for your coaching business and your confidence. “I can’t” closes off what’s possible and decreases your confidence in achieving a goal. There is power in determining your vision and pursuing what is possible even if it seems out of reach. Knowing that with Allah’s help and guidance anything is possible is the foundation for your success and the bravery you need to move forward.
Step 3: Work in your zone of genius
Working in your zone of genius, or doing what comes easily to you and you excel at, is key in starting up your coaching business with confidence. Your passion, knowledge, and commitment to your work will shine through your marketing, making it easier for those who would benefit from your coaching to connect with you. It will also be where you experience the most joy in your work, and where you may be the most helpful to others. Who wouldn’t be confident working in an area they know they are great at?
Step 4: Start-up
Despite your fears, worries, and doubts, go ahead and take the plunge. Confidence is built over time and with experience. The sooner you start, the sooner you will, insha Allah, become comfortable doing this work. This is your life and your dream. No one else can make this happen except you. You may want to start by offering some coaching sessions for free not only to boost your confidence but to build a foundation on which to build your business. All coaches start somewhere—the choice is yours to make.
Step 5: Make a plan to earn the credentials you seek
Because you are conscientious and want to excel at everything you pursue, you may be eager to earn formal qualifications. It’s important for you to be genuine and avoid feeling like a fraud. Taking a formal coaching course or working with a master coach are great ways to deepen your coaching knowledge and experience. Continuing to invest in becoming a masterful coach and knowing you are being mentored to acquire more skills will insha Allah give you the courage and confidence to keep moving forward.
Keep your greater purpose in mind.
Starting a coaching business may seem daunting at first. However, connecting with your “why”—the reason you are doing this in the first place—will motivate you to move forward and develop the confidence you need to begin.
What is it going to mean to you to finally help clients, make money, and have your coaching business established? I know for many mothers, starting a coaching business is not only a way to be of service doing something they love, but to gain financial independence so they can have improve their quality of life, or leave an abusive relationship.
Ask yourself, how important is becoming financially independent to you? How long are you willing or able to wait before you experience that independence? And finally, by not taking action, what circumstance(s) are you choosing to allow in your life?
The answers to these questions are a starting point for your journey. Hold the vision of the life you dream of close to your heart, and get to work.
